I have been using this 4% benzoin tincture combined with 10% glycerine as a total preservative for years now with no issues with my products - and have some original batch stock over 10 years old that is still like new.  It has a hint of a vanilla scent to it.

This works well in many formulations that are based on ointments, lotions and gels. 

If fingers are being dipped into the container I use it at 3-4% depending on how watery the product is.
If the container has a dispensing lid, I use it at 1%.

How to use:
Depending on your emulsification process:
Option 1. Add to the water phase when it is warm, or 
Option 2. Stir in at the end of your blending before adding your essential oils so you can check your scent.
