Characteristics
Sweet basil has an herbaceous, sweet, floral odour with anise-like back-notes, and a balsamic-woody undertone.

Therapeutic actions
Analgesic, antidepressant, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, cephalic, digestive, emmenagogue, expectorant, febrifuge, nervine, sudorific.

When to use
As the fresh scent of basil is uplifting, awakening, clarifying and stimulating, the oil is ideal when used in a diffuser/vaporiser or a massage oil to help relieve nervous tension, mild anxiety and the stress of study or work. However, be aware that if you are using it around others, they may find it too heady!

You can also use basil as an inhalation for the temporary relief of headache and sinus congestion or as an appetite stimulant.  Basil also stimulates the circulation, especially the respiratory system.

Basil is recommended for delayed menstruation, scanty periods and abdominal cramps.

Basil is also used in dental products, soaps, cosmetics and perfumery.

How to use
Massage, ointment, inhalation, diffuser, oil vaporiser.

Blends well with
Bergamot, Clary Sage, Clove Bud, Eucalyptus, Juniper, Lavender, Lemon, Lime, Mandarin, Neroli, Orange, and Rosemary.

Traditional usage
An annual herb with a powerful aroma, basil is known for its uses in cookery, and has traditionally been prescribed for melancholy.  Basil Sweet is higher in linalool than traditional Basil, and is considered a gentler oil.  In Greek its name means 'royal remedy' or 'king'.  Beloved culinary plant of Indian, Asian and Mediterranean countries.
